Are machine learning and artificial intelligence the same thing? We clarify the confusion together.

Artificial intelligence is the general name for systems that can perform tasks that require human-like intelligence. These tasks include skills such as thinking, learning, problem solving, decision making, and even language understanding. Artificial intelligence covers a wide field, and machine learning is a sub-branch of this field.


Artificial intelligence systems are basically divided into three categories:


  • Narrow (Weak) AI: They are systems designed to perform a specific task (e.g. voice assistants).
  • General (Strong) Artificial Intelligence: They are theoretical systems that can think in multiple ways, similar to human intelligence.
  • Super Intelligence: It is a type of artificial intelligence that does not yet exist and is advanced to a level that can surpass human intelligence.


What is Machine Learning?


Machine learning is one of the sub-disciplines of artificial intelligence and enables systems to learn from data. That is, it gives a computer the ability to perform certain tasks without being explicitly programmed. The main idea here is that the system can extract meaning from past data and make predictions or decisions suitable for similar situations in the future.


Machine learning falls into three basic categories:


  • Supervised Learning
    It is trained with labeled data. For example; distinguishing spam emails.
  • Unsupervised Learning
    It aims to discover patterns with unlabeled data. For example; customer segmentation.
  • Reinforcement Learning
    The system learns with reward/punishment logic. For example; AI agents playing games.


So, what are the differences between them?


Although the terms artificial intelligence and machine learning are often used interchangeably, there are actually fundamental differences between them. The most obvious difference is the difference in scope and method.
