NASA's Perseverance rover has made important geological discoveries in an area called "Witch Hazel Hill" on the western rim of Jezero Crater on Mars. This region contains the shattered remains of molten and then solidified rocks that rose to the surface from the depths of Mars billions of years ago.
Scientists state that these rocks came to the surface during meteor impacts in the early periods of Mars and that they carry important clues about the planet's geological past.

Over the past four months, Perseverance has collected five rock samples, performed detailed analyzes on seven different rocks, and laser-examined 83 rock fragments in its most intense scientific data collection to date. The samples obtained in this process allow obtaining more in-depth information about the ancient climate and water availability of Mars.

The samples collected by Perseverance will be brought to Earth with future Mars Sample Return missions and will contribute to the search for traces of life on Mars.
